On-page SEO: content, structure and voice search

On-page SEO: content, structure and voice search

On-page SEO is everything you control on the page itself: the content, how it is structured, and the signals that tell a search engine (and now an AI model) what it is about. It is the part of SEO with the highest return, because it is fully in your hands, and it is where most sites leave the easiest wins on the table.

Write for the question, not the keyword

The old model of repeating a keyword is dead. Search engines and AI understand topics and intent, so the goal is to answer the real question behind the query, and the related sub-questions around it. Practically:

  • Lead each section with the answer, then explain. This is how content earns featured snippets and AI citations.
  • Cover the topic's sub-questions, not just the head term, so one page can be relevant to many related queries.
  • Write clearly and specifically. Vague, padded content ranks and gets cited less than direct, useful content.

Structure the page so machines and humans can read it

  • One clear H1, then a logical hierarchy of H2s and H3s that maps the topic.
  • Descriptive title tag and meta description that state the value, within length limits.
  • Internal links to related content, building topical clusters instead of orphan pages.
  • Clean structured data so the content is machine-readable (see what is Schema).
  • Scannable formatting: short paragraphs, lists and clear subheadings.

Voice and conversational search

Voice queries and AI assistants are longer and more natural than typed ones ("what is the best CRM for a B2B services company" rather than "best CRM"). Content that answers full questions in natural language, with a clear direct answer, is what these systems surface. It is the same discipline as writing for AI answers: be the clearest, most direct source for a real question.

What to stop doing

Keyword stuffing, thin pages built for a single term, duplicate content across pages, and burying the answer under three paragraphs of preamble. None of it survives modern ranking, and all of it hurts citability.

How SmartLinks works on this

We treat on-page as content architecture, not a checklist: pages that answer real questions, structured for humans, search and AI alike, and linked into topical clusters. It is core to our SEO & AI Search work.

If your content ranks below its quality, the problem is usually structure and intent, not effort. The Diagnosis shows what to fix.
