International SEO: how to attract markets abroad

Expanding to a new market is not a translation job. A page translated word for word, on the wrong URL structure, without the right signals, is invisible to the market it targets. International SEO is the discipline of making sure the right version of your site reaches the right country and language, and it is where a lot of expansion budget quietly leaks.

The three pillars

1. URL structure. Decide how the site is organized by market:

  • ccTLD (.pt, .es): strongest local signal, most expensive to maintain.
  • Subdirectory (site.com/en/): consolidates authority on one domain, easiest to manage. Usually the best choice for B2B.
  • Subdomain (en.site.com): a middle option, but authority is more fragmented.

2. hreflang. These tags tell Google which version serves which language and region, so a Portuguese user gets the PT page and a UK user gets the EN one. Done wrong, Google shows the wrong version or treats the pages as duplicates. This is the single most common international SEO failure.

3. Local intent, not just language. The same product is searched with different words, expectations and competitors in each market. Real international SEO researches local keywords and adapts the content, instead of translating and hoping.

What breaks most often

  • Automatic translation with no local keyword research, so the pages target words nobody searches.
  • Missing or inconsistent hreflang, causing the wrong version to rank.
  • Duplicate content across markets without clear signals of which serves whom.
  • One version getting all the internal links and authority while the others starve.

Why it matters more with AI search

AI assistants answer in the user's language and context. If your entity and content are only well-structured in one language, you are cited in one market and absent in the others. Structured data and clear language signals decide where you show up.

How SmartLinks works on this

We set up international SEO as infrastructure: the right URL structure, correct hreflang, and content adapted to local intent, not translated blind, so each market finds the version built for it. It is part of our SEO & AI Search work, tied to demand generation.

If you are expanding abroad and organic is not following, the structure is usually the reason. The Diagnosis pinpoints it.
