The data stack for B2B: measure what matters

Most B2B teams do not have a data problem, they have a data-into-decisions problem. The tools are installed, the dashboards exist, and yet nobody can say which channel generated pipeline. A useful data stack is not the longest list of tools, it is the set of pieces that turn behavior into decisions, connected to the CRM.

The data layer: the foundation

A data layer is a structured object on the page that holds the information about what is happening (page type, user actions, values) in one place, so tags and analytics tools read from it instead of scraping the page. It is what makes tracking reliable and maintainable: change the site, and you update the data layer once rather than fixing a dozen tags. Without it, tracking breaks quietly every time the site changes.

Reporting connectors: getting data where you work

Connectors (the category where tools like Dataslayer and Supermetrics sit) pull data from ad platforms, analytics and search into one place, whether that is a BI tool, a spreadsheet or a dashboard. They save the manual export-and-paste cycle and keep reporting current. The choice between them comes down to the sources you use, the destination you report into, and cost, not to a feature war. The point is the same: stop assembling reports by hand.

RUM: what real users experience

Real User Monitoring measures performance from actual visitors' devices, rather than a lab test. It captures how your site really performs across the connections and devices your audience uses, which is what Core Web Vitals and, ultimately, ranking and conversion depend on. Lab scores tell you the potential; RUM tells you the reality.

The piece that ties it together: the CRM

Here is where most stacks fall short. Analytics, connectors and monitoring describe traffic. They do not, on their own, tell you what generated revenue. That only happens when the data feeds the CRM, so a session, a form and a closed deal live on the same record. Measurement that stops at the dashboard is interesting; measurement that reaches the pipeline is useful.

How SmartLinks works on this

We build the data stack backwards from the decision: what do you need to know, and what has to connect for the CRM to answer it. Data layer, connectors and monitoring in service of revenue intelligence, not a wall of vanity charts. It is part of our SEO & AI Search and reporting work.

If you have dashboards but still cannot tie a channel to revenue, the stack is measuring the wrong end. The Diagnosis shows the gap.
