Every company faces the same problem: to sell, they need the customer to know the offer, trust the brand and prefer it over the competition. The path between those three points is the buyer's journey, and the sales funnel is how you organise it. In B2B, where the decision is long and involves several people, splitting the funnel into three stages (ToFu, MoFu, BoFu) helps deliver the right message at the right moment.
ToFu, top of the funnel
The awareness stage: make the brand known and spark interest in people who do not yet realise they have a problem to solve. The goal is not to sell, it is to offer value and show you understand the prospect's pain.
Tactics: SEO and content that answers the audience's questions, digital PR, and paid social to reach targeted audiences.
Metrics: unique visitors, reach, click-through rate, content downloads, brand mentions.
MoFu, middle of the funnel
The relationship and nurturing stage. The prospect already knows the brand and is weighing options. The goal is to deepen the relationship and prove value without overwhelming. The challenge is the balance between frequency and relevance.
Tactics: segmented email, webinars, interactive content (calculators, simulators), demos, in-depth guides.
Metrics: email open rate, landing page engagement, conversion rate to offers (demos, trials).
BoFu, bottom of the funnel
The decision stage. The buyer is almost ready but has final doubts about price, alternatives or support. The right information at the right moment unlocks the conversion.
Tactics: live demos, use cases, competitor comparison guides, FAQs, proposal or demo request forms, onboarding materials.
Metrics: conversion rate, customer acquisition cost (CAC), lead-to-customer ratio, return on ad spend, post-sale retention.
The common mistake: treating the funnel as isolated stages
The funnel only works when it is one continuous system, not three separate campaigns. If what happens at ToFu is not captured in the CRM and tied to what sales does at BoFu, the context is lost and the buyer has to repeat themselves. Optimising the funnel is a permanent process of measuring, testing and adjusting on a single data foundation.
How SmartLinks sees this
We do not design funnels in slide decks, we build them into the system. In CRM & RevOps and the Sales Engine, each stage has its lifecycle stages, its automations and its metrics, connected end to end, so a top-of-funnel lead does not get lost before it reaches sales.
If your marketing leads rarely turn into deals, the problem is not the top of the funnel, it is the broken link in the middle. See where in the Diagnosis.
