Email marketing: the shifts that actually matter

Email marketing: the shifts that actually matter

Email is still one of the highest-return channels in B2B, but the ground under it has shifted. Chasing the trend of the year is the wrong move. Understanding the structural changes and building around them is what keeps email out of the spam folder and tied to pipeline.

Authentication is no longer optional

The biggest change is not a design trend, it is a requirement. Since February 2024, email authentication (SPF, DKIM and DMARC) stopped being a best practice and became mandatory for bulk senders, enforced by Google and Yahoo. Fail it and your emails get rejected or marked as spam, no matter how good the content is (Google). Deliverability is now the foundation: get the technical setup right before worrying about anything else.

AI as an accelerator, not an author

Generative AI is useful across the email workflow: drafting and refining copy, generating subject-line variations, structuring A/B tests, and supporting predictive send-time and segmentation. The value is speed. The limit is the same as anywhere else: AI drafts, humans decide. Automated copy sent without judgement reads generic and erodes the trust you spent years building.

Automation that reacts to behaviour

Email has moved from one-off sends to behaviour-driven series. A contact who downloads a resource, visits pricing or goes quiet should each trigger a different, relevant sequence. This only works when the automation sits on a clean CRM with the right lifecycle stages, which is the difference between nurturing and spraying.

First-party data is the real engine

The durable advantage is owning your data. A unified customer view, built from first-party data in the CRM, is what makes personalisation relevant instead of creepy or generic. Segmentation by behaviour, stage and preference beats blasting the whole list, every time.

How SmartLinks handles this

In our Marketing Automation work, we treat email as part of the system, not a standalone tactic: authentication and deliverability first, automation on a clean CRM, and personalisation from first-party data. That is what turns email from a cost into a channel that reports pipeline.

If your emails land in spam or your list has stopped engaging, the problem is usually the plumbing, not the subject line. A Diagnosis shows you where.
