Search no longer lives only in the SERP. It also lives in the chat box. SEO is still the operating system of organic visibility, but a new layer has appeared: AEO (Answer Engine Optimization), which makes sure your brand shows up inside the answer given by AI assistants (ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity) and inside Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode.
It is not SEO against AEO. It is SEO plus AEO. SEO builds presence; AEO projects that presence into the answer.
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Optimizes | Site, content, authority, UX | On-site and off-site presence and citations |
| Result | Page listed in the SERP | Brand inside the answer |
| Goal | Bring traffic and conversions | Be the cited reference |
| Metrics | Impressions, CTR, clicks, conversion | Cited mentions, co-occurrences, share of citations |
People ask long, contextual questions. Models answer with text and sources. A large share of the decision now happens without a click, and Google pulls traffic with AI Overviews (studies report organic CTR drops between 15% and 46% when an AI Overview appears, according to SeoProfy). The practical translation is simple: optimizing for rankings alone is no longer enough. You need to be cited.
From what we see in practice, models cite more:
They cite less: interactive tools without context, thin listings and pages that depend on JavaScript to render the critical content.
Models learn by co-mention: where and with whom you are cited shapes the context in which you appear in answers. Community discussions, category review sites, specialized media and video with a clean transcript build that context. The tactic is to map the most-cited domains and pages in your category and work on presence there, through content, PR, editorial partnerships and reviews.
When you ask an assistant a question, it does not search the exact phrase. It breaks the question into sub-questions, runs separate searches and merges the information into a single answer. The consequence: pages cited in the answer do not need to rank first on Google for the original query. Covering a topic's sub-questions well is worth more than chasing a single keyword.
SEO and AEO are not campaigns, they are a layer of the acquisition system. In our SEO & AI Search work, we handle content architecture, structured data and entity authority so your brand is both found in the SERP and cited in the answer, tied to the rest of demand generation.
If today you only measure rankings and clicks, you are watching half the game. The other half is how much AI cites you, and that can be measured. See where you stand in the Diagnosis.
