A "pure spam" manual action is one of the harshest things Google can do to a site: a human reviewer flags it for aggressive spam practices, and the site can lose almost all of its organic visibility overnight. It is rare for a legitimate business, but it happens after inheriting a bad domain, a hack, or aggressive tactics from a previous agency.

## What it is

Unlike an algorithmic drop, a manual action is a deliberate decision by Google's team, visible in Search Console under Security & Manual Actions. "Pure spam" means the site is seen as using practices like automatically generated gibberish, scraped content, cloaking or aggressive cloaked redirects.

## Why it happens to legitimate sites

- **Expired domains** bought with a toxic history.
- **Hacks** that inject spam pages or redirects without the owner noticing.
- **Inherited tactics:** doorway pages, mass thin content or manipulative links from a previous setup.

## The recovery steps

1. **Confirm it in Search Console.** Read the exact manual action and which parts of the site it covers.
2. **Find the cause.** Audit for auto-generated content, injected pages, cloaking, hidden redirects and toxic links. If the site was hacked, this is also a security cleanup.
3. **Clean thoroughly.** Remove or rewrite the offending content, kill injected pages, fix redirects, and disavow only if there is a clear manipulative link pattern.
4. **Document what you did.** Google's reviewers want evidence of genuine cleanup, not promises.
5. **File a reconsideration request.** Be specific: what was wrong, what you removed, what changed. Vague requests get rejected.
6. **Wait and monitor.** Review can take days to weeks. If rejected, the response usually points to what remains.
